CAN PEOPLE CHANGE THE WEATHER?

METEOROLOGIST JEFF HABY

Much of the weather can not be controlled by people. This includes tornadoes, hurricanes and high/low pressure systems. While people can prepare for the weather and forecast for it, people can not create the weather events and patterns. People can not choose when it will rain and what the temperature is outside. Since people can not change the weather they have adapted by changing the immediate environment. Examples are housing, air conditioning, heating and clothing.

Although people can not change the weather they can change the climate. Carbon emissions and greenhouse gases contribute to changing the climate. Results that can occur are droughts, extreme weather events, warming average temperature and local environment changes. People have changed the local environment through urbanization, deforestation, carbon emissions, farming and landscaping.

While people can not control the weather there is some tweaking they can do to it. One example is cloud seeding. In this process condensation nuclei are dropped into a cloud in order to initiate the precipitation process. Other examples include wind brakes and irrigation to increase moisture.
