A LITTLE SUNSHINE MAKES A DIFFERENCE

METEOROLOGIST JEFF HABY

When forecasting temperatures, the amount of sunshine is often critical and can be the one factor that makes or breaks a forecast. Cloud cover decreases the diurnal range between the high and low temperature. Sunshine will increase the diurnal range, often quite dramatically. It is not uncommon for the temperature to jump up 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit in less than an hour after clouds give way to sunshine during the day. This is especially true when clouds give way to sun in the afternoon hours when the sun is high in the sky. Hence the phrase, "a little sunshine makes a difference!" This reminds me of the phrase, "A little love from the heart makes a difference".
