METEOROLOGIST JEFF HABY
Which way is really up? Is it north, is it a direction in the vertical, is it any direction that is in the opposite
direction of
gravitational acceleration? Actually there is no true up. There are however, human constructed "relative"
ups. It is a common perception that the North Pole points to up. But, many people in the Southern Hemisphere feel it
is the South Pole that points to up. The problem is that we have a circular type universe. A uniform ball has no
natural up position. Once you travel into deep space, you will lose all awareness of which direction is up. I think
gravity has much to do with the feeling of up. Since gravity pulls you down, the opposite direction must be up,
right? With this said, there is no true up for everyone / everywhere, just relative ups.
