METEOROLOGIST JEFF HABY
A classic event occurs when all the ingredients to enhance a particular weather event are in place. Some
classic events include a classic:
(lake effect snow, Nor'easter,
Severe weather situation, mid-latitude cyclone,
downsloping wind). A classic event can also be thought of as a "best of" event. Ingredients are the combination of:
moisture,
instability,
lift,
wind and temperature. A classic severe weather event will have abundant warm sector
moisture, a conditionally unstable atmosphere, positive UVV mechanisms in place
(vorticity,
jet stream,
low level convergence,
WAA),
strong directional and speed shear (low level jet with upper level jet aloft), and warm
PBL
temperatures. The region where the greatest percentage of these ingredients comes together will have the
"classic set-up". A classic set-up can lead to a classic event.
