METEOROLOGICAL SENSOR TYPES

METEOROLOGIST JEFF HABY

Meteorology instruments are classified in two types. They are the remote sensors and direct sensors (in-situ sensors). Direct sensors are emerged in the substance they are measuring. Examples include thermometers and barometers. Remote sensors can be divided into two types. They are categorized as passive remote sensors or active remote sensors. Passive remote sensors do not send out their own energy source. They "listen" for energy that comes toward them. Examples of passive remote sensors are the human ear and satellites. Active remote sensors both send out their own energy and "listen" for the return of the energy. Examples of active remote sensors include radar and wind profilers.
