RITA AND KATRINA: THE CAT 5 SISTERS

METEOROLOGIST JEFF HABY

Both Rita and Katrina were in a similar position around the time of CAT 5 status. Both these storms were once in a generation storms yet they occurred less than a month apart in 2005. The lack of upper level wind shear and deep / very warm Gulf waters fueled the storms. The southeast portion of the Gulf of Mexico has a current of deep very warm water called the loop current. The images below show the position of each storm around the time of their peak.
