CORE PUNCHING THE LION'S DEN

METEOROLOGIST JEFF HABY

One of the most dangerous maneuvers a storm chaser can do is known as core punching. It is extremely dangerous to do and should never be done, especially by inexperienced chasers. Core punching puts the vehicle and the life of the storm chaser in danger. Core punching is driving into the heavy precipitation region of a thunderstorm in order to get to a side of the storm where there is a better view of the updraft region. The lion's den is the extremely heavy rainfall and large hail that can occur in the downdraft region of the storm. A trip through the lion's den can severely damage the vehicle. Large hailstones can break through windshields and put dents all over the car. If a rain wrapped tornado is present a lion's roar of tornado wind can put your life in danger. The very heavy rainfall restricts visibility, greatly slickens the roads and increases the chances for a traffic accident.
