The wind speed will have an important influence on the surface temperature both during the
day and at night. MOS can be outforecasted when are you able to take advantage of the
situations in which MOS is underestimating the influence of light wind on the temperature
forecast. You will be able to take the best advantage of this when the skies are
clear.
At night, significant radiational cooling will occur when the skies are clear. If the wind is
light it will result in much of the cooling being concentrating close to the surface. Stronger
winds will mix the surface air with warmer air aloft and this will result in not as much surface cooling. The low
temperature will tend to go lower than the MOS forecast low temperature when the wind goes very
light to calm and the skies are clear at night
(boundary layer decoupling).
During the day, significant solar warming will occur when the skies are clear. If the wind is
light it will result in much of the warming being concentrating close to the surface. Stronger
winds will mix the surface air with cooler air aloft and this will result in not as much surface warming. The high
temperature will tend to go higher than the MOS forecast high temperature during the day when the wind
goes very light to calm and the skies are clear.
