A lenticular cloud is a lens shaped cloud that forms over and near a mountain or mountain range. Generally the air is stable but the mountain
produces a forced lifting to the air. Since the air is stable, the air tries to return to the original elevation after lifting over the mountain.
If the air is near saturation, the lifting over the mountain or mountain range will saturate the air producing clouds. The clouds can appear
motionless since the clouds are developing where the air is rising and dissipating where the air is sinking and the position of the rising
and sinking air is not changing significantly. The picture below is a lenticular cloud over Pikes Peak in Colorado (March 16, 2014).
