METEOROLOGIST JEFF HABY
The following model works in the Northern Hemisphere where the circulation with low pressure is counterclockwise and the circulation with
a high pressure is clockwise.
For a low pressure, with the right hand, point the thump upwards. Next, curl the fingers inward. The direction the fingers curl is in
a counterclockwise direction. The thumb pointing up is a reminder that low pressure leads to rising air. This is a way to remember
the low pressure circulation. Low pressure tends to bring in stormier weather.
For a high pressure, with the right hand, point the thump downwards. Next, curl the fingers. The direction the fingers curl is in a
clockwise direction. The thumb pointing down is a reminder that high pressure leads to sinking air. This is a way to remember
the high pressure circulation. High pressure tends to bring in nicer weather.
