WX MODEL 25: Circulation and Convergence

METEOROLOGIST JEFF HABY

A circulation is a rotation of air. Pressure systems (highs and lows) have a circulation pattern. Lows, also called cyclones, circulate counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere. High pressure systems circulate clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere.

Cyclones have an inward circulation also. This results in a convergence of air that leads to rising air. The image below shows a low pressure circulation off the west coast of the United States. The region highlighted in black shows the best convergence that is taking place. This can be also be seen by how the wind vector are flowing into each other at this location.
