WHAT IS A RAIN CURTAIN?

METEOROLOGIST JEFF HABY

Rain can be seen falling out of clouds from a distance. It looks like streaks going from the cloud toward the ground. Just like curtains that cover a window, a rain curtain will cover up the scenery behind it. Often the rain curtains will have varying visibilities. In some places it will be easy to see through it to the background scenery, while in other places the rain will be so heavy that nothing can be seen behind the rain curtain. The image below is an example of a rain curtain. It is not quite heavy enough to completely cover up Pikes Peak and the mountains behind it. Shortly after this photo, heavy rain with small hail was observed at the location the photo was taken.
