FREEZING RAIN SOUNDING

  • Below freezing at surface and complete melting of precipitation aloft before it reaches the surface
  • Temperature sounding generally consists of shallow freezing layer in the boundary layer and capped with well above freezing temperatures aloft
  • Freezing rain will be most hazardous if soil temperature is below freezing, if surface air temperature is well below freezing, and if freezing rain is heavy
  • If temperatures are at or just below freezing and the soil temperature is above freezing, most freezing rain will accumulate on elevated surfaces such as power lines, trees, and bridges/overpasses
