SNOW SOUNDING

  • Temperatures aloft are below freezing or near freezing.
  • If the air is fairly dry and a little above freezing in the lower troposphere, evaporative cooling can change precipitation that is initially rain to snow.
  • Most snow results from elevated lifting (parcel do not rise from surface but rather from higher aloft due to dynamic lifting, usually from top of inversion)
